Member Story
Stephanie
At Curative Connections, there are countless causes for celebration every day. Our mission is to help people achieve their goals for independence, and it is incredibly special whenever a member meets one of their goals. Stephanie, a member of Curative’s life skills program Ready, Set, Life!, recently reached one of her goals for independence – she moved into her own home!
“At first, I was kind of nervous but now I’m so used to it.” Stephanie says.
Stephanie was recently recognized with a Top Effort Award for the progress she has made in our life skills program, which helps adults with disabilities build skills they need for independence at home and in our community. “She’s really making great steps forward,” Team Lead Laura Bechard shares. Stephanie has been working at TJ Maxx for eight years and continues to make strides in her independent living skills.
“Curative has helped me come out of my shell,” Stephanie says, “I used to be real quiet and didn’t want to do anything because I was nervous, but now since I’ve been with this program, I’ve been more outgoing.”
We are so proud of Stephanie and honored to have been a part of her independence journey.
Volunteer Highlight
Daybreak Outing Volunteers
We often talk about how vital volunteers are to Curative, and their impact cannot be overstated. Over the last several months, Curative has offered daily outing opportunities to comply with new state mandates. This has been a significant undertaking for our staff, but with the help of volunteers, these outings are possible, and the impact is profound.
Carrie, Jill, Doris and Marge are four of Curative’s outing volunteers. After retiring, Marge was encouraged by Curative’s President and CEO to volunteer here. Marge’s initial hesitance did not last long. “On day one, you just felt like part of the family,” she shares. Soon after, “Marge in Charge,” as she is affectionately referred to, recruited her sister-in-law, Jill, and friend, Carrie, to volunteer. This trio was then joined by Doris, who recently moved to Northeast Wisconsin from the Milwaukee area. Doris was looking for opportunities to become involved in the community. Through volunteering at Curative, she’s found friends in her fellow outing volunteers and Curative members.
These volunteers use their community connections to coordinate enriching outings for members and brighten their days. Members look forward to every time they are joined by a volunteer on an outing. But they are not the only ones impacted by these outing experiences. “We get more out of it than what the members get out of it,” Carrie says, “What’s better than putting a smile on somebody’s face?”
We are immensely grateful to Carrie, Jill, Doris and Marge for all that they do to make a difference in the lives of our members and staff by volunteering during outings. “Seeing them interact with our members is just such an amazing and beautiful thing to watch,” says Daybreak Team Lead Joy Benfield.

Giving Tuesday Update
Thanks to your support on GivingTuesday, Curative successfully raised the necessary funds to purchase a bus for outings! We’re thrilled that the bus has arrived, and we absolutely love it. Members, staff and volunteers have taken the bus to places such as libraries, restaurants and community events for these daily outing opportunities. The generous gifts made on GivingTuesday are empowering our members by giving them freedom and flexibility to explore and engage with our community, allowing them to experience the activities they’re interested in.
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. We invite you to save the date for this year’s GivingTuesday: December 3, 2024.
Curative in the Community
Yesteryear Village
The grand opening and ribbon cutting of Yesteryear Village was a monumental moment for Curative and the Greater Green Bay community, but it was only the beginning. A week after the grand opening, a member of the Yesteryear Program received the first-ever haircut in the Philip J. and Elizabeth B. Hendrickson Beauty Salon and Barber Shop. Members of Curative’s life skills program have made delicious blueberry pie in the KC Stock Foundation Diner. Groups such as the Greater Green Bay Chamber have visited us at Yesteryear, and reporters from local stations have shared the space with audiences across our community. There have been numerous milestones, memories, and moments of reminiscence experienced already since the renovation of Curative Connections West, and we are excited for what is yet to come.
