Pedaling Together
Exercise, well-being and social interaction are at the core of our person-centered care. Group outings are a way we foster social interaction between programs. The warmer weather means our members are out and about in the community. Our large group dementia program at Curative Connections East has found joy in visiting Yesteryear Village at our west side location. One of the interactive experiences that has become most popular has been taking our 2-person bike for a spin around the Village town square. Whether pedaling together or relaxing while another member drives, the bike has become a favorite pastime.
The impact has been incredible as the new activity eased anxiety and gave members a chance to reminiscence while getting some healthy spins. With such high interest and positive results, Curative Connections east was inspired to invest in their own bike. The group helped supplement program funds by holding a bake and snack sale with delicious and healthy treats made by staff and members.
Thanks to a successful team effort and generous support, a second bike is on its was for our east side! Our members are excited and cannot wait to take the new tandem for a spin around the beautiful outdoor garden at Curative East.
Older Americans Month- Flip the Script on Aging
May is Older Americans Month, led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), the purpose is to recognize the contributions older Americans make to society, as well as highlighting aging trends, and transforming how people perceive older Americans. This year’s theme is Flip the Script on Aging, fighting misconceptions and stereotypes, as well as promoting activities and opportunities to remain active and engaged as one ages.
At Curative, we are celebrating by highlighting a few members of our Senior Training and Employment Program (STEP). Luz has been with the STEP program since April 2023 and is currently working in the gift shop at the Neville Public Museum. She says that working there has restored her confidence and she is excited about her future as she embarks on her higher education journey.
This upcoming fall, Luz will be enrolled at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and will cross off one of her bucket list items as she pursues an associate’s degree. She then plans to transfer to the University of Wisconsin Green Bay to complete her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Latin American and Global Studies. Like most college students, Luz doesn’t have an ideal job in mind but knows that her degree will open many doors and opportunities for her. We can’t wait to have another Phoenix at Curative!
Luz offers some inspiring words for those who worry they are “too old” to go back to school or try something new. True to the spirit of Older Americans Month, Luz says, “goals, opportunities, and our happiness do not have an age limit or an expiration date. Yes, it is scary, but we are worth it. We will not regret the outcome of achieving our goals, taking the chances and most of all to be happy! Whatever you have been putting off because you think it is too late. . . It is not! Go for it! I am.” There is no time limit to achieving your goals.
Thank You Volunteers!
National Volunteer Week was April 20-26th and we want to shout out our amazing volunteers. Your connection to our members and our mission truly makes this place so special. We are so grateful for your involvement in our programs and member activities!
To our volunteer drivers, thank you for braving the NFL Draft traffic to get members to their destinations safely. Thank you also for your time and dedication to providing an essential service to our community.
We also want to thank all our furry friends like Blue and Sundance, who brighten up everyone’s days with their visits.
Advocacy Update
Thanks to our Board members for their overwhelming support to help share the Curative Connections’ story. More than 20 members attended an annual legislative breakfast held at Aspiro with 6 other non-profit partners last month. As the state prepares the 2025-27 budget, this was our opportunity to talk about the impact on potential Medicaid cuts for our members. More than 60% of our members rely on Medicaid (or Family Cares) funds to support their well-being. Several members also joined us and shared their personal testimonies on how Curative Connections’ adult day services provide the essential care needed for their loved ones.
In addition, several area legislators and a US Senator personally visited Curative Connections to learn more about us. Our leadership and staff have also been active in presenting at public hearings of the Joint Finance Committee. Our voices need to be heard at both the state and Federal levels. We will continue to share our message with all legislators as major decisions are being made.
What’s happing on Capitol Hill? In the next two weeks, the U.S. House of Representatives committees will be meeting to evaluate cuts submitted by Congress in a budget reconciliation bill. This bill includes $880 billion in Medicaid cuts so now is the time to make our voices heard. Please join our efforts and express your support to save Medicaid. How?
