Daylight Savings and Dementia

It’s almost time to spring forward, and while many of us have been anticipating longer days and warmer weather, it can be a tough adjustment for those living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

An important part of managing dementia is a consistent routine. That is part of the reason why our dementia programs follow a daily structure. Shifting ahead an hour disrupts the routine and affects our body clock (circadian rhythm). It can impact sleep and cause changes in behavior.

What can caregivers do to prepare? Do your best to control the environment and stick to your loved one’s routine. If weather permits, take advantage of the sunlight which helps naturally regulate our circadian rhythms. Sunlight with some physical activity can also help your loved one sleep better. The biggest thing to remember is to change as little as possible in their routine and check in with your loved one.

Daylight Savings starts Sunday, March 8, 2026.
